This project came straight from a dear friend and long-time client—actually, one of my very first freelance clients way back in 2011. Bonnie Buckner, PhD is the Founder and CEO of the International Institute for Dreaming and Imagery. She’s also the author of The Secret Mind: Unlock the Power of Dreams to Transform Your Life and a Senior Fellow at George Washington University’s Center for Excellence in Public Leadership.
We set out to make a teaser video for her upcoming board game and workshop tool, The Dream Game. I was thrilled when she asked me to take this on. We had some fantastic photos from a workshop the International Institute for Dreaming and Imagery ran at Game Changers Academy in Poland, plus the packaging and manual art were ready to go. My job was to bring it all to life with some music, titles, and some custom motion graphics.
It was such a fun project for me, too. I really enjoyed stretching my skills by animating the different pieces of artwork from the manual. Specifically, I loved adding that little “twinkle” to the star patterns and getting those revolving dotted circles to spin. It takes a little extra work to nail those details, but seeing them come alive adds so much personality to the scenes.
We actually ended up creating two versions: one tailored for prospective players and another focused on leadership development. Plus, we needed both horizontal and vertical cuts! To handle that, I built the motion graphics in a large resolution so they could work for both formats. It was also fun to see how the animations shifted slightly between the horizontal and vertical versions.
